Sub-base for roads and car parks
We build sub-bases for roads and car parks. The sub-base transfers loads from the surface to the ground below. Its design depends on the ground, the vehicle traffic and the planned surface. The same layer thickness will not be right for every footpath, access road and car park.

What should the scope cover?
Check whether the job includes preparing the ground, excavating to formation level, delivering the material, spreading the layers, compaction and checking levels. Specify the surfacing and the drainage elements separately. We charge a fixed price per job for sub-base work, so the scope must be agreed before the quote.
Do not assume that the sub-base offer includes laying block paving, asphalt or concrete. Soil stabilisation is also a separate technical solution, and its scope has to be confirmed.
Material and layers
The aggregate must meet the requirements of the design and suit the load. We offer crushed stone, chippings and sub-base mixes; agree the fraction and properties for the specific solution. See our materials.
The layers should have properties that allow proper compaction. Simply spreading aggregate or driving over it a few times with a car does not prove that the sub-base has been built to the requirements.
Compaction and water
The machines and the thickness of each compacted layer must suit the material. We have a bulldozer and a roller: the bulldozer moves and shapes the ground, and the roller compacts the layers — one machine does not replace the other. The method of checking must match what the contractor can actually do.
Falls and water run-off are planned together with the sub-base. Water standing on the surface or in the ground below can impair the performance of the whole structure.
Questions about sub-bases
What thickness is needed for a car park?
It follows from a design that takes the ground, traffic and surface into account. There is no single figure for every car park.
Does the sub-base need to be compacted?
How it is laid and compacted is part of the technical solution. Agree it with the contractor, together with how the result will be checked.
Does the service include block paving or asphalt?
Only if this has been confirmed separately in the scope.
