Choose the right material for the job
The term “building sand” on its own does not tell you whether the aggregate meets the requirements for mortar, a bedding layer or another application. The requirements should follow from the construction method used for the work. Do not buy material based only on its colour or appearance.
For block paving, the material has to suit the whole system of layers. Read about aggregate under block paving. Structural concrete requires a separate specification, not just any sand from the yard.
Quantity and collection
You can estimate the volume of a layer from its area and thickness. Converting it to tonnes requires data for the specific sand. Moisture and the condition of the material can affect the result; do not use one conversion factor for every aggregate.
When collecting, tell us which vehicle you will use and its payload. “A full trailer” is not a unit of sale. For delivery, show us where the load should be tipped and tell us about any access restrictions.
